Indian jewellers get crash course on machine techniquesMonday, 13th February 2006 (3940 views) Jewellery makers in eastern India are being offered the chance to move into machine-designed jewellery through a new workshop in Calcutta. The 21-day course is being run by the eastern regional office of the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) and will verse participants in machine-based designing. The GJEPC feels that too many jewellery makers in eastern India rely on handcrafting ornaments from raw gold, with not enough using more sophisticated machine-based methods. It is such a problem, the GJEPC argues, that local shops often have to parachute in international designers to fill the void. The GJEPC believes this gap between supply and demand can be bridged by the new programme. "This course is aimed at bridging this gap. We need to develop the pool of talent present in the eastern region and if that is done, we don't need to go out anymore," Shantanu Rajguru, GJEPC's eastern region director, told Kolcata Newsline. "We would like to bring to the industry's notice that wonderful designs can also be created with machines." The workshop has been organised in conjunction with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, in association with the Jewellery Product Development Centre in Mumbai.
