Friday, 10th February 2006 (5474 views) Golden ornaments depicting gods and goddesses are doing a roaring trade in India, according to Business Standard.Despite the rise in the price of gold during the past year, an Indian dealer states that consumers are still keen to buy the objects. The newspaper claims that the Kabul Trading Company is the sole authorised dealer of the items in Punjab, Haryana and Kashmir, which are made using 24-carat gold-plated foils brought in from Switzerland. The firm's manager, Inderjit S Kataria, told the newspaper that the rising gold prices have not impacted on sales. "People in India are god-fearing," he said. "When it comes to religious feelings, people dont bother about the money and never indulge in bargaining, and so it doesnt hamper the sales." As well as deity figures, gold-plated replicas of the Golden Temple and sites of pilgrimage such as Medina and Mecca are also selling well. The company claims that sales have risen by 26 per cent in the past year to around 1,500 items a month, with festival times such as Diwali seeing purchases soar.
