India's thirst for gold has transferred itself into the wedding invitation market, according to local reports.

In the latest craze sweeping the nation, young Indians tying the knot are adorning their designer wedding invites with gold, diamonds and other stones.

"Gone are the days when invitation cards were simple and plain," Atul Vyas at Atul Printers told newKerala.com.

"People now prefer designer cards with lots of decoration work."

The new wave of designer cards typically cost between Rs 40 and Rs 330 apiece.

But more discerning customers are willing to spend up to Rs 1,000 on each card for pure gold and diamond work.

Cards decked with the finest jewels are now seen as a sign of status in India and designer cards are now commonplace among the business fraternity.

Weddings are viewed as auspicious events in India, with families earning even a modest income prepared to splash out to mark the occasion.

India is the world's largest gold importer, consuming 630 tons in 2004. It uses 99 per cent of its gold availability for production of gold jewellery.
