Calcutta's first jewellery mall

Monday, 23rd January 2006 (4378 views)

The Indian city of Calcutta has opened its first mall dedicated to jewellery, the city's Telegraph newspaper has reported.

Fort Knox offers jewellers 80,000 sq ft of space spread out over nine floors. Amongst the varieties on offer are ornamental, designer, costume and bridal bling, featuring both international and local brands.

The mall itself covers five of the building's floors, with another three taken up by jeweller's offices. The eighth floor houses the mall's entertainments, a VIP lounge, Italian restaurant and ice bar.

Ashok Bengani, president of Fort Knox, boasted that the mall had "signed a deal with Tanishq, which will be the anchor store, taking up 4,000 sq ft on the ground level with a 60ft frontage. They will come in with an array of new designs besides their routine range of gold, diamond and bridal jewellery."

He added: "Colour stone jewellery using emerald, ruby, sapphire and pearl are very popular these days, and we will have a rich range of this stuff."

Each floor of the mall offers customers a unique shopping experience. The first concentrates on diamonds with the self proclaimed leading name in Indian diamonds Kiah occupying 2,000 square feet.

Second floor retailers include designer watch shop Exclusive Lines, whilst the third floor houses bridal jewellery store Sawan Sukha.
