Garish gold & kitchen ceramicsMonday, 23rd January 2006 (3963 views) A Canadian-born artist is hoping to bring his unique style of art to households everywhere, the Toronto Globe and Mail has reported.Marcel Dzama, originally from Winniepeg, is known in the art world for his illustrations of bizarre and nightmarish characters, such as bats flying away with the heads of human victims, sad ghosts and action figures that resemble trees. Now Dzama has brought his characters off the paper and into the real world. His first jewellery collection, made from 18 carat gold and other precious stones, features a bat with diamond eyes, an octopus with tentacles studded with diamonds and a bear hanging from a noose. The pieces go for US$5,000 each, and are being sold by MZ Wallace. Meanwhile, Dzama is also trying his hand in kitchen ceramics. The artist has produced several pieces for the home for Cerealart. They include sad ghost salt and pepper shakers, airtight melting snowman canisters and a lamp which resembles a glum looking cloud. Cerealart said that the respone to Dzama's work had been "wonderful" and added: "We find that people respond really well to the more quirky, strange, kind of in-your-face things. It's easier to sell something that's a little more shocking."
