Spectrum Award winner Tom Dailing has been speaking to the Stevens Point Journal about his $10,000 gold and gemstone pendant.

His pendant came joint first in the eveningwear category of the American Gem Trade Association's (AGTA's) annual design competition, frequently referred to as the Jewellery Oscars.

"I wanted to create a piece that looked impossible to make," he commented on his creation, which he describes as a prototype.

The innovative gold pendant, which required a new technological approach, has a red tourmaline suspended across it with three bridges of diamonds. The gold surface reflects the sparkling gems.

Winners of the Spectrum Awards were judged on criteria such as innovation, quality of gemstones, good workmanship, wearability and consumer appeal.

The awards will be presented during the AGTA's Gem Fair held at Tuscon in February 2006.
