Iron Age coins on display in EssexWednesday, 7th December 2005 (3993 views) A hoard of 2,000 year-old gold coins has gone on display at Colchester Castle.Experts believe the coins, which were discovered at Heybridge, were minted to reward warriors who fought for the first kings living in the area around Essex. The coins make up part of a year-long display at the castle called Rulers, Warriors and Druids, which charts developments in Iron Age Essex from 150 BC until the Roman invasion in AD43. The exhibition also includes finds from a warrior burial at Kelvedon, some of the earliest writing from Britain scratched on pottery, and a reconstruction of an Iron Age burial pyre. In 2003, Britain's second pre-Roman coin die was found near Alton, Hampshire.
