Christie's to auction ancient gold jewellery

Tuesday, 29th November 2005 (4070 views)

Christie's will be auctioning off ancient gold jewellery in New York on December 8th.

One lot is a suite of Achaemenid gold jewellery, with a necklace and two bracelets, that is expected to go for $80,000 - $120,000.

For Grecian enthusiasts there is a gold, glass and stone necklace dating from the 2nd to 1st century BC, while Roman jewellery aficionados can bid for a gold snake bracelet, dating from the same era.

Another serpent-inspired item is a Greek gold and garnet snake armband valued at around $25,000 to $35,000.

Gold was of particular importance in the ancient world and the ancient civilisations left many gold treasures behind, some of which are in museum collections.

Following the ancient jewellery auction, there will be an antiquities auction and an ancient Egyptian art one, which features several mummies.
