Tuesday, 25th October 2005 (3827 views)

Indian jewellery enthusiast Surekha Kulkarni is to give a presentation on the relationship between jewellery and the human spirit in Hindu culture.

According to the Courier-Journal, her presentation will take place in Louisville, Kentucky where she now resides.

Ms Kulkarni first became fascinated with Indian beading when she returned to Bombay to visit family and now uses beads of gold, silver, glass, stone and semi-precious gems to fashion her creations.

"In the ancient cultures of India, the people put in limitless energy and creativity in the invention of ornaments that celebrate the human body," she told the Courier-Journal.

Ms Kulkarni will be explaining the ancient tradition of Solah Shringar, or 16 adornments, whereby a woman, often a bride, is adorned with 16 ornaments.

Gold is regarded as a particularly auspicious metal for weddings as well as for the Hindi festival of Diwali.
