Jewels of India starts in October

Friday, 14th October 2005 (4268 views)

This year's Jewels of India festival will be taking place between October 22nd and 25th.

Organised by Expoworld, the event proved popular last year, with overseas jewellery a particular attraction.

2005 marks the festival's seventh anniversary, spent this year at the Sree Kanteerava Indoor Stadium in Bangalore.

Exhibitors drawn from around India will be displaying an array of gold, diamonds and gems as well as a selection of fine jewellery.

Indian consumers are well known for their consumption of the precious metal gold and prefer it pure, rather than mixed with other metals such as platinum and silver.

"Unless they are convinced that it is 22-carat gold, they won't buy it," Tijori designer Mitali Jariwala explained to the Deccan Herald.

Nevertheless, Ms Jariwala notes that Indian consumers have recently begun to wear metals such as silver and lighter gold pieces, in addition to traditional weighty gold jewellery.

October is a notably good time for sales of gold jewellery, as it precedes such festivals as Diwali and coincides with the wedding season.
