Christies in New York is preparing for its Magnificent Jewels auction on October 19th, with some rare gold pieces topping the bill.

The top lot at the event will be a rare pink diamond set in a gold and platinum ring, which is expected to fetch between $2.5 and $3 million.

However, Rahul Kadakia, head of Christies' jewellery department, has told Forbes that the item is likely to go for much more than that figure.

The ring is set with an internally-flawless 25-carat pink diamond mounted in 18-carat rose gold, a variant that has experienced a resurgence in popularity.

The anticipated demand for the items to be auctioned at Christies highlights the growing interest in the jewellery market as a whole.

The Christies event will also see the sale of a Tiffany & Co necklace and earring set of blue opal mounted in 18-carat gold, expected to fetch in the region of $6,000 to $8,000.

Other pieces from this set's designer, Angela Cummings, will also go under the hammer at the auction house.
