Tushaar Mehta has died at the age of 58.

He was one of Chennai's leading citizens and has been credited with giving structure to the gold trade in Chennai.

Mr Mehta was the president of the Gold Club of Chennai, an organisation that worked with the World Gold Council to promote gold in the city.

After gaining a degree in gemmology from the Gemological Institute of America, he went on to take a postgraduate course in Metallurgy at IIT-Madras.

In addition to his impact on the gold trade, Mr Mehta was the Honorary Consul for the Czech Republic in Chennai and a keen sportsman, regularly playing golf and commentating on cricket.

Mehta Jewellery, of which Mr Mehta was a trustee, was the first jewellers in Chennai to get ISO 9001 certification. The company designs, manufactures and supplies gold, platinum, diamond, and silver jewellery.
