Rs 70 lakh gold offeringMonday, 19th September 2005 (3854 views) A hillside shrine dedicated to Lord Venkateswara has recently been attracting large gold offerings. The latest of these comes from a devotee from Maharashtra who offered ten kilograms of gold ornaments. These were worth an estimated Rs 7,000,000, or 70 lakh, and follow the ten gold biscuits, weighing one kilogram each, offered to the temple in August. The temple is located in Tirumala on the seventh peak of the Tirupati Hill called Venkata Hill, which is where the god's name hails from. In the epics Rig Veda and Asthadasa Puranas, Lord Venkateswara is described as the giver of boons. All the great dynasties of rulers from the southern peninsula of India have at some time paid homage to Lord Venkateswara and offered gifts in this shrine.
