Gifts of jewellery entitled push presents are the latest thing for fathers to bestow on their wives after delivery of their child.

According to Knight Ridder Newspapers, new mothers in America have been receiving elaborate gifts such as 18-carat gold rings studded with birthstones and baby shoe charms encrusted with diamonds as an appreciation for their efforts.

Gold jewellery is now being used in this manner to commemorate family life while offering a memento of the happy occasion.

Due to its longevity, gold jewellery can be looked back on many years after the flowers traditionally received at the hospital have wilted.

Helena Krodel, spokeswoman for the US's Jewellery Information Centre, revealed that the trend for push presents has risen in recent years.

"At important events in their lives, they want the best money can buy," she said.

She suggested that it might be due to the fact that today's parents are accustomed to luxury goods.
