A National Institute for Jewellery Design and Technology is to be set up by the Delhi State Industrial Development Corporation (DSIDC) in conjunction with other state organisations.

This new development was discussed during a session on 'Delhi: An Emerging Gems and Jewellery Destination' which gathered together jewellers, designers and exporters from North India.

Consequently, the need for talented craftsmen to carry jewellery design into the next era was established.

Traditional Indian jewellers are facing competition from the blossoming section of branded jewellery and also imports from countries such as China.

In addition to the institute idea, Jalaj Shrivastava, managing director of DSIDC, unveiled plans for the establishment of a special economic zone in Delhi much like the ones operating in Mumbai and Calcutta and the one planned for Shamsabad.

"We are trying to get the institute faculty in order to roll out the courses in the next two months to help prepare trained manpower to meet the market needs ahead of the special economic zone coming up," Srivastava told the Indo-Asian News Service.

A new SEZ on the proposed Raja Garden site would specialise in marketing and sales with a further area near Baprola set aside for aiding technological manufacturing advances.
