Christie's could auction Marcos jewellery

Friday, 26th August 2005 (4361 views)

Christie's has made its offer to auction Imelda Marcos' jewellery in talks with government officials from the Philippines including the Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG).

Besides the jewellery taken from the former dictator's widow, the Roumeloites collection, confiscated from her Greek friend, will be auctioned at the same time.

Christie's European managing director, Harco Van den Oever, announced that if its offer were successful then the auction would probably take place in either November 2005 or May 2006 in Geneva.

PCGG estimates have placed the total value of the jewellery at $10 million and a bracelet of rubies and diamonds set in yellow gold is believed to be among the items.

By holding the auction outside of the Philippines, the PCGG hopes to reach a wider audience and thereby maximise its profits.

Sotheby's and Bonhams will also be meeting with government officials in the weeks to come to present their respective auctioning offers.
