For discerning customers wanting authenticated gold watches, Portero's website is one place to go.

The luxury goods online auction company runs rather like eBay and has now joined forces with the watch company Tourneau, which will authenticate its watches.

Portero is aimed at upmarket consumers and its current offerings include: a pair of David Yurman 18-carat thoroughbred shrimp earrings for $306, an Omega solid 14-carat gold cuff watch at $510 and a Rolex 18-carat gold diamond Datejust watch currently attracting a $3,350 bid.

Like eBay, Portero charges traders a fee to put their goods on the website and it also takes a cut of profits.

Other online gold sales are also gaining momentum; e-gold, which allows large-scale gold transactions, is fast-growing and now holds 2.5 tonnes of gold.

Purchasing authenticated gold items has never been easier.
