$20,000 gold Rolex watch at charity golf tournament

Wednesday, 17th August 2005 (4532 views)

The four-day 29th Danny Thompson memorial golf tournament in Idaho hopes to raise money for leukaemia with the help of a $20,000 gold Rolex watch.

The watch is one of the prizes in the Thompson Memorial silent auction, which is the "biggest single moneymaker at the tournament" according to Georgie Fenton, the tournament director.

Celebrities supporting the event include two cast members of the popular 1980s cop show 'Hill Street Blues', hockey league player Craig Ludwig and baseball player Bill Buckner.

Since it began, the Thompson Memorial has raised $7,305,500 for cancer research, which has gone to the University of Minnesota Leukemia Research Foundation and Mountain States Tumor Institute of Boise.

Gold is commonly used as an alloy in watch production as this makes it less prone to scratching.
