Zambia to step up jewellery production

Friday, 12th August 2005 (4165 views)

Zambian jewellery designers need to be promoted, the Mining Sector Diversification Programme (MSDP) has argued.

Currently, Zambian designers fashion gold and gems into dazzling creations but they have not really broken into the international market and need to be made more aware of international standards.

"The local jewellery manufacturing industry is currently driven by a few companies and gifted individuals," the MSDP's programme manager Chris Sealy told the Times of Zambia.

The MSDP is running courses in lapidary and related skills and has already increased the miners' building capacity.

Zambia has a copperbelt in its Western province and is in Africa, which mines 14 per cent of the world's gold but is not a large buyer of the metal.
