Friday, 12th August 2005 (6170 views) Zambian jewellery designers need to be promoted, the Mining Sector Diversification Programme (MSDP) has argued.<br/><br/>Currently, Zambian designers fashion gold and gems into dazzling creations but they have not really broken into the international market and need to be made more aware of international standards.<br/><br/>"The local jewellery manufacturing industry is currently driven by a few companies and gifted individuals," the MSDP's programme manager Chris Sealy told the Times of Zambia.<br/><br/>The MSDP is running courses in lapidary and related skills and has already increased the miners' building capacity.<br/><br/>Zambia has a copperbelt in its Western province and is in Africa, which mines 14 per cent of the world's gold but is not a large buyer of the metal.<br/><br/><br/><img alt="track" src='http://feeds.directnews.org.uk/feedtrack/dn.gif?feedid=196&itemid=15022617'/>© Adfero Ltd
