Gold bling rulesThursday, 11th August 2005 (4548 views) Gold jewellery has become increasing popular with the spread of hip-hop culture and gold's celebrity endorsement, as a new book out this month can testify.Minya Oh chases gold's rise in her new book 'Bling Bling: Hip-Hop's Crown Jewels' which hits the shops on August 21st. Hip-hoppers Nelly and 50 Cent are famous gold-wearers and are 'frosted' (the modern term replacing 'bling') up to the max. Some artists have taken ostentatious and expensive jewellery to extremes such as 80s legend Slick Rick whose teeth were 'blinged up' with a three-carat diamond. Sports legend Antonio Brown of the Washington Redskins American football team also famously has four gold teeth, which demonstrates the crossover appeal of gold jewellery. "Hip-hop artists were the ones who were leading the way to have this amazing, beautiful fantasylike view where there is no such thing as too much," says Minya Oh. Yet this hip-hop dream world of gold accessories has mainstream appeal as well as finding its way to upmarket shops such as Cartier. With a new generation of celebrities wearing gold, the trend for luxury doesn't look likely to stop. © Adfero Ltd
