The Municipality of Dubai has begun a new certification service that will guarantee the quality of jewellery that goes onto the market.

The Gems and Precious Material Unit at Dubai Central Laboratory will test gemstones, gold and diamonds then provide traders and customers with details concerning their quality.

According to Abdullah Al Shaibani, assistant director-general for technical services at the Municipality, this is the first laboratory of its kind in the Middle East.

Traders and customers will be able to check the standard of the jewels, and will be issued an official certificate stating their quality.

This service continues to build up Dubai's reputation of being one of the best places in the world for the purchase of gold and diamond jewellery.

"Since Dubai is the centre of gold and jewellery in the region, we want to ensure that no customer faces any problem while buying gemstones or gold jewellery," Mr Al Shaibani is reported to have said.
