Gold photos celebrate human rightsThursday, 21st July 2005 (4366 views) Two California-based firms have joined forces to launch a new commemorative fine jewellery line. The new range, entitled American Luminaries, has been developed by female-owned companies 1865 and Planetjill to mark the 140th anniversary of passage of the Thirteenth Amendment, which declared slavery illegal in the United States. The eighteen carat gold and sepia photographs of human rights revolutionaries have been meticulously forged and feature such famous names as WEB Dubois, Harriet Tubman, Mary McLeod Bethune and Booker T Washington, Black News reports. The firms claim that the collection aims to "inspire and empower both the wearer and the beholder". "It is vital to memorialise the historic events that played such a pivotal role in making the United States the beacon of freedom that it represents today," said Planetjill president, Jill Schiff. Patrice Davenport, president of 1865, added: "Aside from its bold lines and beauty, the jewellery is poised to promote racial understanding, healing and self-education. For example, wearers will learn from reading the product biographies, that several featured revolutionaries were extremely influential in the fight for women's suffrage." The special commemorative edition of the American Luminaries collection is available through December, 2005 and comes packaged in an antique-finish tribute box that reads 1865-2005, Celebrating 140 Years of Freedom. The collection is priced from $400 to $1500 and available exclusively at www.1865Co.com.
