Nancy Dell'Olio, international icon and celebrity wife, appears to be turning her hand to something new – making her own jewellery.

Having moved to London from Rome only four years ago, it may be surprising that she has already become something of an icon in the UK.

She is perhaps as well known for her stunning looks as for the fact that she is the girlfriend of the England coach, Sven-Goran Eriksson.

And more recently she has had to contend with the public humiliation of his two affairs.

When Lesley White went to meet Ms Dell'Olio for the Sunday Times Magazine she found her wearing a pair of gold earrings studded with jade, rubies, diamonds.

She explained she had designed the extravagant and exquisite pieces herself.

When asked if she feels like a cheerleader for older women she simply replied: "Why older?

"'Today, just because you can have the beauty of 20 with a great gift to have the brain as well, the experience and confidence, nothing is better for a woman than to be in her forties," she added.

Other things the Italian beauty has tried during her past 40-odd years include being a non-practising lawyer, a presenter of MTV's Footballers Cribs, a shopaholic, a charity leader of Truce and a Wandsworth cookery centre owner.

And she also feels: "Now it is time to explore other careers. If I want to model swimwear, why not? It makes me laugh."

So perhaps there is a chance Ms Dell'Olio will be starting up her own jewellery making business in the near future.
