Baseball star launches signature gold wristbandThursday, 7th July 2005 (4082 views) One of the star's of baseball in the US has announced plans for a range of new precious metal wristbands to commemorate a consecutive game streak.Cal Ripken Jr, known as baseball's "Iron Man", is to celebrate the tenth anniversary of his record-breaking feat with a range of new bracelets which will raise funds for the Cal Ripken Sr Foundation and the Robert Packard Centre for ALS Research at Johns Hopkins University. The former Orioles player played 2,131 games in a row, setting the record on September 6th 1995. "It feels like 2,131 was just yesterday," he told the Washington Post, speaking at Sports Legends at Camden Yards. "It really provides a platform to do good. Hopefully, the community will benefit." The signature series bracelets come in gold, silver, titanium and platinum, and range from $500 to $5,000 with each representing a game from the streak. The proceeds will help fund research into amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
