The new vogue for dressing pets is gathering momentum in the states – complete with "bling" accessories.

Barry Kieselstein-Cord, a jewellery maker from the Big Apple, has begun producing a whole range of accessories using precious metals for man's best friend.

Dogs can don outfits and jewellery, while owners can also join in the process, buying sculptures of their pets or pendants.

Mr Kieselstein-Cord told the New York Times the add-ons would range from $1 to $10,000, adding that he had already tested the waters.

"A few years ago, I designed an 18-karat choke chain - you know, the kind with two rings to curb unruly dogs," he said.

"I sold them in Bergdorf Goodman as an experiment. At $7,500 apiece, they sold out - they're gone."

The move has won the backing of the American Kennel Club, which has helped identify a number of different breeds suitable for the fashion treatment, including golden retrievers, dachshunds and pugs.
