A new jewellery exhibition in the Indonesian capital Jakarta aims to evoke pride in the country's beauty.

The Expressions of the Soul exhibition at the Alila Hotel in Central Jakarta displays two major lines of jewellery - Irwan Williams' Heritage Indonesia Collection and Runic Jewels.

Mr Williams, a former New Yorker who has lived in Indonesia for 38 years, is described by the Jakarta Post as "one of the driving forces behind the exhibition".

Heritage is a series of 16 pendants of iconic images of Indonesian culture and follows ten years of work with Javanese craftspeople. Runic Jewels features designs that look like ancient lettering and most items feature beautiful gems like agate and jasper from Indonesia, as well as other stones like opal and ruby.

After the exhibition, Heritage and Runic items will be for sale at Mr Williams' gallery Sae in Ciputat, Tangerang, and in Warwick Purser Lifestyle in Kemang, South Jakarta, as well as at Sogo in Jakarta, and in Bali.

Expression of the Soul also includes the work of the late Vivianna (Torun) Bolow-Hobe, who created beauty from inexpensive, natural materials such as rattan, wood and pebbles. The Swedish-born designer died in Jakarta last year and her clients included Picasso, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Ingrid Bergman and Brigitte Bardot.

Some of the jewellery is on sale to raise funds for victims of the devastating Boxing Day tsunami.
