White gold is pushing platinum off its podium, to emerge as the new favourite in the Chinese jewellery market.<br/><br/>Since 2002 the demand for platinum jewellery has waned, with soaring prices and low profit margins driving consumers and manufacturers to seek a brighter alternative, Reuters reports.<br/><br/>The new kid on the block is white gold, an alloy formed from gold and light-coloured metals such as silver and palladium.<br/><br/>"Already high prices have caused a fall in platinum jewellery demand with jewellery manufacturers turning to palladium and white gold," claimed a report from Scotia Mocatta, the bullion banking division of the Bank of Nova Scotia.<br/><br/>Johnson Matthey, a precious metal refiner, estimated that the platinum jewellery market fell by 20 per cent last year, to only 960,000 ounces.<br/><br/>White gold is fast becoming a status symbol for jewellery lovers in the East.<img alt="track" src="http://directnews.dehavilland.co.uk/dn.gif?feedid=196&itemid=8484253"/>
