Jewellers add glamour to life saving accessory

Monday, 18th April 2005 (4024 views)

Medical warning tags are becoming a popular and important accessory on the wrists and around the necks of US consumers.

The tags are a low-tech alternative to electronic medical records and can help doctors and emergency physicians identify quickly what conditions a patient may have, according to the Wall Street Journal.

In the past, people were put off by the cheaper, standard style tags on offer, but now jewellers and other companies are creating high quality, fashionable pieces so people can wear their medical information with style.

Lauren's Hope, was set up after a diabetic teenager who wanted a fashionable medical warning bracelet. It now sells about 900 medical warning bracelets per month, priced at around $40 to $140.

In addition, Tiffany has created a similar bracelet, with an 18 carat gold version for $1,050.

Physicians claim that diagnosing unconscious patients can prove so hard that they always search for tags and paramedics are now trained to do this too.track
