US museum displays ancient jewellery

Friday, 11th March 2005 (3890 views)

An American museum is launching a new exhibition focusing on a popular jewellery style.

Cameo Appearances includes over 160 cameos covering the Greco-Roman era through to the 19th century.

Among the items on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art is a 19th century set made up of a necklace, brooch and tiara covered in onyx and mounted in gold.

The item is designed by Luigi Sualini and is an example of how many cameos were designed as jewellery, but were not always intended as wearable pieces.

According to National Jeweler, the exhibit runs from March 8th until October 30th.

A number of educational programmes are also being run in line with the new display.track
