JC Penney sales were up last month, as Valentine's Day and Presidents' Day helped boost sales.

Fine jewellery achieved particularly good sales results and was one of the retailer's top performing product categories during February.

Same-store sales increased by 6.1 per cent in February and total company earnings were $1.28 billion, up from $1.2 billion compared to the four-week period ending February 26th in 2004.

In addition catalogue and internet sales were up by 6.4 per cent.

JC Penney is one of the largest department stores in the US and its catalogue is the largest for general merchandise in the US.
