China's Pearl River Delta has now become the largest processing base for Hong Kong, as jewellers flock to the area to find skilful and low cost craftsmen.

The Panyu District of Guangzhou City now has over 200 processing facilities owned by Hong Kong jewellery firms and has helped to employ more than 50,000 workers.

Not only has the area helped to increase production, but it has also helped to make it more convenient for Hong Kong jewellery to enter the mainland market, according to jewellery makers.

The district has a total production value of $604 million and could process over 100 tonnes of gold and platinum each year.

In addition, the jewellery processed in the district has an export volume of $800 million.

According to Xinhua, the facilities in Panyu as so good that 95 per cent of the jewellery in Hong Kong's market is processed there, with items also exported to European and Oceania countries.

The Chonghua District and Shenzhen have also seen a number of jewellery processing facilities built.
