Necklaces are reportedly playing a strong role in this season's US jewellery trends, with layered gold, silver and pearl strands featuring prominently.

According to an article in the Rocky Mountain News, Russ Parker, jewellery manager at Saks Fifth Avenue, claims women are falling for the layered look, combining different designers, textures, metals and styles.

Other strong trends in the run-up to Valentine's Day include gold and diamond necklaces that come in two lengths - opera, 32 inches, and matinee, 24 inches - and can be worn front, down the back, as a belt, double stranded or as a shorter necklace and bracelet.

The newspaper recommends investing in medallions, oversize pendants with open filigree work and gold chains in order to stay ahead of the trend.

The article also mentions the growing trend for right-hand rings, for women who want to wear elaborate rings and diamonds without getting engaged. Many feature elaborate gold settings and filigree work.
