AngloGold calls for jewellery trainingFriday, 4th February 2005 (4288 views) The executive marketing director of AngloGold Ashanti has called for earlier training for the South African jewellery market.According to Kelvin Williams, training at grassroots level is essential to ensure Africa can make its mark on the world jewellery market and so that craftsmen can work on their own. Mr Williams was speaking at the opening of a jewellery workshop, at the Soweto Jewellery School in Dube, Soweto, according to All Africa. The school has seen its size double since Ashanti has sponsored one of its workshops on campus. Mr Williams said: "We feel we are more able to achieve this with this kind of community development, rather than the established industry, which is very orientated towards Eurocentric styles of jewellery design. "It's not about competing with the rest of the world, but creating something distinctly South African." Mr Williams also suggested companies could decide to lend jewellery companies gold to help them make jewellery.
