Jewellery thieves in Malaysia are set for disappointment after they stole items worth just £100.

The robbers made off with trays of dazzling jewellery but sharper eyes may have spotted the accompanying notice describing the true nature of the items.

Goldsmith Ng Soon Sing sells both gold and gold-plated items in his shop and had placed each next to each other in a display case.

But the hapless thieves not only scooped the less expensive items but then compounded their error by getting caught on closed-circuit television.

NG Soon Sing, 48, told the New Straights Times that he was held up by four men, one of them armed with a gun

He said the duo shunned the other gold items in the display case and packed the fake items into a bag before fleeing.
