Ancient gold jewellery stolen

Thursday, 9th December 2004 (3861 views)

Ancient Roman pieces including gold jewellery have been stolen from the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra.

Among the items stolen were gold jewellery and a vase dating from 100 and 200 BC.

According to ABC News Online, the police have notified Customs and Interpol to try and stop the thieves from removing the pieces from Australia.

The artefacts are said to be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

"We haven't ascertained how the thieves gained entry. The area is one which we always have secured and which we will secure even more in the future now," the dean of ANU's Faculty of Arts, Adam Shoemaker said.

The pieces were being used by the university for research purposes.
