Indian council and college to offer jewellery courses

Tuesday, 23rd November 2004 (4601 views)

The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council has secured a deal with the Bhawanipur Gujarati Education Society College in India to offer courses in jewellery trade.

The draft was first approved on November 15 and will see the Mumbai based institute grant a franchise status to run courses on all aspects of the jewellery trade, such as goldsmith work, diamond setting and gold refining.

Pankaj Parekh, council convener (eastern region), told Fibre to Fashion: "Faced by a shortage of trained personnel at Manikanchan, the gem park in Salt Lake, the council's Kolkata office had been trying to set up a training facility.

"They approached a number of colleges, including Bhawanipur, which readily accepted the proposal."

It is thought that certificate courses will begin from the 2005 academic session.

Figures suggest that around 20 per cent of the country's 850 tonne annual gold import arrives in the state for jewellery production.
