Fashion rules in the jewellery sector are changing as something that was once considered an ultimate jewellery fashion faux pas is now the basis for a new trend.

Mixing gold and silver has been viewed for a long time as a bad choice when concerning jewellery but now celebrities and designers are looking to mix things up a bit and make items even more trendy.

Arika Chan, designer of Arika C Jewelry in California, told the Oregonian: "Jewelry has become so incredibly trendy recently that people are seeking to mix it up a bit.

"Layering silver and gold adds a lot more depth to your look, and it's so unexpected. You wouldn't think of it, but it totally works."

Gold and silver were combined back in 1983 by designer David Turman who twisted the two metals into a helix for his signature cable bracelet.

However, the jewellery firm has claimed that its client base has recently changed as style icons have flocked to purchase mixed metal items to create a new look.

Among the stars seen sporting similar items are Jessica Simpson, Mischa Barton and Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen.

Vivian Wang, half of the design duo Viv&Ingrid, added: "We're not afraid to mix prints anymore, so why should we be afraid to mix silver and gold? It's more fun and gives us more freedom with our accessories."
