Treasure hunters scour US beachesFriday, 5th November 2004 (4015 views) Treasure hunters in America have discovered a host of gold items when searching the beaches of Florida.Beaches battered from the recent hurricane have revealed gold coins and other treasures which were rumoured to be buried in dunes, from a 1715 Spanish fleet. "The storms washed the dunes away to what it was like in 1715," Mitch King, vice president of the Treasure Coast Archaeological Society explained to Florida Today. It is thought that 10 to 12 ships carried thousand of jewels and precious coins when they sank in a hurricane centuries ago and there are a number of items still waiting to be found. Items found recently have included jewellery including gold chains, emerald rings and diamond pieces. Many of the coins had clear dates and details on them and treasure hunters are "optimistic" about next season, since they have already had "some nice finds".
