Opening of India's first gold souk approaches

Friday, 1st October 2004 (4270 views)

India's first gold souk is set to open later this month and it is expected to launch some international brands in the country and bring together top jewellers and designers.

The new souk is to display over 35 major international and national brands and allow customers to mix and match designs.

G.S. Pillai, president of Aerens Gold Souk, said: "With India having liberalised import of gold and allowed for replenishment against exports, there is a sea change in retailing that will see more international brands coming in."

According to IANS, the gold souk will open on October 22 and will have a full floor just for branded jewellery, with two key brands Alukkas and D'Damas also opening outlets in the souk.

Surendra Gupta, chairman and managing director of Aerens Gold Souk International, commented: "With people from nearby cities coming routinely to the capital to shop for gold, we are targeting customers within 300-400 km of Delhi to come to the souk for an enjoyable shopping experience without the hassle of parking problems."

Customers will also be able to purchase golden designer watches and writing instruments from the venue, which is designed to look like "a pearl emerging from a oyster".
