Wednesday, 8th September 2004 (5780 views) Africa is to introduce a four-year jewellery degree at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) to help give a more technological and scientific know-how to the jewellery industry.<BR/><BR/>It is hoped the course, which will be run from the next academic year, will allow a greater understanding of jewellery making, the handling of precious minerals and how to use computers for jewellery making.<BR/><BR/>In addition short courses will be run for those already in the trade, to help boost the use of traditional patterns, improve work and expand the industry.<BR/><BR/>George Asante, deputy managing director of operations at the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) explained to Accra Mail that there is also a need for a gold refinery to help add value to raw gold and to help improve export potential.<BR/><BR/>Mr Asante also hopes to encourage the production and sale of gold nuggets, commemorative coins and medallions.<img src="http://directnews.dehavilland.co.uk/dn.gif?feedid=196&itemid=3377933"/>
