Gold degree to be introduced in African universityWednesday, 8th September 2004 (4043 views) Africa is to introduce a four-year jewellery degree at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) to help give a more technological and scientific know-how to the jewellery industry. It is hoped the course, which will be run from the next academic year, will allow a greater understanding of jewellery making, the handling of precious minerals and how to use computers for jewellery making. In addition short courses will be run for those already in the trade, to help boost the use of traditional patterns, improve work and expand the industry. George Asante, deputy managing director of operations at the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) explained to Accra Mail that there is also a need for a gold refinery to help add value to raw gold and to help improve export potential. Mr Asante also hopes to encourage the production and sale of gold nuggets, commemorative coins and medallions.
