MSEZ may house jewellery units from Mumbai

Tuesday, 31st August 2004 (4521 views)

It has been reported that the Madras Special Economic Zone (MSEZ) may house units of some jewellery groups from Mumbai, due to the higher cost of space in the Electronics Export Processing Zone in Mumbai.

To meet the growing demand for space from jewellery units the Gem and Jewellery sector in the Santacruz Electronics Export Processing Zone has developed a new phase.

As a result of costs in this new phase being relatively high, a number of jewellery houses are considering setting up their units in cheaper Export Processing Zones in Chennai, Kochi and Visakhapatnam.

The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) asserts that staff training could be carried out on site at the new phases instead of transporting workers from elsewhere.

According to The Hindu Business Line the Gem and Jewellery sector in the Santacruz Electronics Export Processing Zone currently houses 80 units dealing with the export of studded gold jewellery.
