Gold en vogue

Monday, 12th July 2004 (4354 views)

Gold is the colour of summer this year, as the 2004 Olympics get underway and all aspects of fashion, from jewellery, to accessories and clothing, has been gilded.

An Italian gold jewellery fashion show at the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Centre last week showcased the latest in gold accessories, the Shanghai Daily news reports.

I-Style Gold Expressions, organized by the World Gold Council and the Arezzo Promotion Centre of the Vicenza Trade Fair, has been promoting Italian fine jewellery for more than half a century.

A total of 24 top models showcased almost 400 pieces of jewellery, designed by 54 Italian goldsmiths under four themes- Love, Glow, Expression and Impression. The gold jewellery on show was reportedly younger-looking and more fun-loving, without losing its sophistication.

The show featured bold geometric pieces, bi- and tri-coloured gold, plunging Y-necklaces, long lengths of loosely looped chains, crocheted web-like patterns, tribal looks using shell, and designs of flowers and butterflies. Chains of necklace and bracelet staples were on show with shapes ranging from flat oval links to amorphous shapes ideal for the bohemian look, while designers made good use of gold wire, gold net and gold threads, weaving them into scarves, wrap bracelets and exquisite chandelier earrings.

Italy has been involved in gold jewellery design since Roman times and a new exhibition - Men and Gods in the Rome of the Caesars -is currently running at the Shanghai Museum, displaying ancient gold jewellery made in the workshops in Vicenza and Arezzo regions.

Italy processes 500 tons of fine gold annually and has more than 10,000 companies operating in the gold sector, generating a turnover of 4.5 billion euros last year.
