Friday, 9th July 2004 (6245 views) A selection of ancient Egyptian treasures, including a sparkling collection of gold jewellery and a gilded death mask with a winged headdress, is touring North America.

The 144-item exhibit of treasures from the British Museum spans 3,000 years of Egyptian history and goes on display from July 10th to October 31st at the Royal BC Museum in Victoria, the only venue in Western Canada or the Pacific Northwest to host the show in its 10-city tour.

Tourism Victoria is predicting a welcome seven per cent increase in revenues from the Eternal Egypt display of artefacts, and up to 400,000 paid admissions to the museum, following a downturn in revenue last year, Business Edge reports.

"We think it will be gang-busters," Lorne Whyte, CEO of Tourism Victoria, said. "It's one of the finest Egyptian collections in the world and it will probably never cross the Atlantic again."

The exhibit is touring North America, including Canadian cities Toronto and Montreal, because the British Museum is currently undergoing renovation and has run out of storage space.

The Eternal Egypt exhibition is the first major Egyptian exhibit mounted in North America since the Treasures of Tutankhamen appeared in Seattle in 1978.
