Israel joins global hallmarking agreementThursday, 8th July 2004 (4076 views) Israel has reportedly signed up to an international agreement for the hallmarking of gold jewellery.The Standards Institute announced that it will now stamp jewellery produced in the country with internationally accepted purity marks. The agreement aims to ease trade in precious metals, Idex Online reports. Under the treaty, countries agree to allow the import of precious metals with the Common Control Mark. Countries previously checked metals and stamped them with their own marks. A total of 12 European countries, including the UK, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Ireland and Spain, have signed up to the international agreement, and a number of other countries have also expressed an interest in signing the convention. At a later stage Israel will also supply quality symbols for silver and platinum, according to the nation's Standards Institute.
