Katharine Hepburn jewellery auctioned

Friday, 11th June 2004 (3816 views)

Jewellery has formed part of a collection of items once belonging to Katharine Hepburn that have raised £1 million.

A brooch given by Ms Hepburn's boyfriend at the time Howard Hughes, sold for £70,000 at a Sotheby's auction where 222 items were sold.

Leila Dunbar, director of Sotheby's collectibles department told the Scotsman: "We are absolutely thrilled with the results from the first session ... but it is completely understandable given Miss Hepburn's worldwide celebrity and stature."

Other items included furniture, studio photographs and acting membership cards.

The auction for the deceased Academy Award-winning star attracted around 400 bidders and offered an insight into the life of someone who was immensely private.
