Wednesday, 26th May 2004 (6488 views) A jewellery collection belonging to tobacco heiress and millionaire Doris Dukes is to go on auction after touring the world.

Around 150 items will be auctioned at Christie's New York headquarters that feature some of the most spectacular pieces ever created.

Sales are expected to reach $5-$7 million, with proceeds going to the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation to help the arts, child abuse programs and the environment.

Some of the items date back to mid-to-late 19th century and also include a Longines antique gold and blue enamel fob watch, a sapphire, ruby and diamond gold bracelet from Van Cleef & Arpels and gold Carrington & Co cuff links.

Simon Teakle, head of the jewellery department at Christie's told The Star Ledger: "This is very exciting. You don't get collections like this often."

A key piece in the auction is a 19 carat diamond ring by Tiffany, just one of the top jewellers she helped in creating designs.

"This is one of the most interesting sales I've worked on. If you look at the overall content, and calibre and the beauty of the jewellery, you can see the fascinating person behind the collection," Mr Teakle added.
