Marlins unveil huge championship ringThursday, 8th April 2004 (4777 views) The Florida Marlins have celebrated victory in last year's World Series with a hefty 115 gram, 14-karat gold championship ring. The ring will be unveiled on Saturday night and marks the Marlins impressive comeback from 10 games under .500 to beat the New York Yankees in the 2003 Series. Designed by Intergold from Calgary, the ring features 228 diamonds, 13 rubies and a rare teal diamond in the eye of the Marlins logo. One side is engraved with the World Series and Major League Baseball emblems, along with the results of each playoff round, while the other includes each player's name and number and the World Series trophy. Team owner Jeffrey Loria picked out the vast gem-encrusted piece of jewellery, USA Today reports. "It took me about five, six days to get used to it," Loria joked. "I've never heard anybody complain about having too much gold." Loria has reportedly worn a prototype ring this spring in preparation. Eighty copies of the ring, featuring the Marlins' kit, have been made for players and Marlins staff and the first 30,000 fans will receive replicas of the ring. The ring ceremony is part of a weeklong celebration of the World Series win.
