Wednesday, 25th February 2004 (6693 views) Gold lovers in South East Asia are gearing up for a major shopping spree ahead of the Malaysian Mega Sale Carnival this month.<BR/><BR/>The carnival, which begins on February 28th and ends a month later on March 31st, is designed to provide a fillip for the local economy, and typically features a wide selection of jewellery aimed at varying levels of consumer purchasing power.<BR/><BR/>Penang chief minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon will launch the show at Komtar, Penang, featuring a host of discounted jewellery products in an important period for the domestic gold industry.<BR/><BR/>Culture, arts and tourism minister Datuk Paduka Abdul Kadir Sheikh Fadzir says the event is essential for the jewellery trade and other retail operations, as a huge influx of custom arrives.<BR/><BR/>An additional 100,000 tourists visit during the sales every year, Mr Kadir told The Star. <BR/><BR/>Last year, shopping was the second highest tourist activity that contributed RM3.7billion to the country's revenue.
