Gold jewellery remains popular in Western Europe, with celebrity endorsements and the appeal to the youth market helping to drive up sales.

Experts such as Roland Wood from high-class jewellers Boodle & Dunthorne say that the precious metal is in demand.

'On the continent yellow gold is making a comeback,” he told icBerkshire.

This trend has been partly diluted in the UK, he claims, with jewellers seeking to combine gold with white metals to form new alloys to meet changes in demand.

'Pure gold comes out of the ground yellow, so it has to be mixed with other metals to make it white,” he explained.

Boodle & Dunthorne is promoting a number of collections, including a new range from Janeth Weil.

Ms Weil has developed a 60s inspired 'Sphere' range, which focuses on strong colours and textures.

The pieces incorporate round stones forming clusters on necklaces, earrings and rings, and come in 22 carat gold vermeil.

Other new trends in the gold jewellery market include the emerging popularity of charm bracelets.

Mr Wood says charm bracelets are “in vogue”, with the lead set by pop icons such as Beyonce Knowles and Kylie Minogue being picked up on the high street.
